Superb Singing, Plenty of Pep; It's Classic Gilbert &Amp; Sullivan

Summary

Gondolier [Sam Plett] nearly stole the show with his flashing smile and spot-on baritone. His Rising Early in the Morning showed impeccable diction, sonorous vocals and superb timing. You won't find better than this at D'Oyly Carte. Plett is so expressive, he made his onstage brother, [Allen Nixon], look bland by comparison. Nixon did a fine job; he just needed to loosen up a bit and emote a little more. Plus, that close-fitting stocking cap does nothing for him.

The story follows the usual G&S formula: young love, familial will and mistaken identity -- we know the drill. This time around, we're in Venice in 1750 and Marco and [Guiseppe] are choosing wives from a chorus of contadine (peasant women). They use the foolproof method of meandering around blindfolded until they catch one of the young women, then proclaiming sweet-voiced Cathryn McIvor (Tessa) and Alison Stenekes Loewen (Gianetta) as their true loves.
