Superbug Threat in Spotlight

Summary

WINNIPEG hospitals could follow Ontario's lead and screen every patient for antibiotic resistant "superbugs" if there's an unexpected outbreak, health officials said Tuesday.

Dr. John Embil, director of Health Sciences Centre's infection prevention and control unit, said unlike Ontario, Manitoba hospitals haven't experienced a surge of superbug infections and have been successful in keeping infection rates half the national average.

Any patient who has previously tested positive for a superbug or has been inside a facility experiencing a superbug outbreak is considered high-risk and is automatically tested for a superbug. While some people infected with MRSA may have infected sores or boils, others can be carriers of a superbug and may not look or feel ill.
