"That's very unusual," said Ian Naish, the board's director of rail investigations in Ottawa. "There have been three there in the last year as far as I can figure out." None of the accidents at the crossing have been fatal, he noted.

Throughout Manitoba, there were 19 crossing accidents in 2007, with one fatality and two people seriously injured, according to Operation Lifesaver, the national public education program sponsored by the Railway Association of Canada and Transport Canada. Its statistics say that in 2006, there were 20 crossing collisions, including two deaths and four people seriously injured.

The railway has been working with Manitoba's highways department to upgrade lights at the crossing, said Breanne Feigel, CP Rail's regional spokeswoman in Alberta.
