Take Aim at Caution in Rugged Deer Terrain

Summary

Most of these differences can be attributed to the significant changes in landscape and terrain in the two provinces, with hunters in Manitoba hunting a lot of field edges and other terrain that is relatively easy to traverse.

Good friend and sometime fishing and hunting buddy Jake MacDonald recently returned from a hunting trip on Lake of the Woods and I was reminded of some of the challenges, and indeed dangers, that can arise when hunting a Shield lake. Many hunters actually hunt the islands and large, inaccessible pieces of mainland, all of which are accessed by boat. Clearly, while the weather has been giving us a bit of a break, this is surely not to last much longer.

That said, this can also be a very rewarding way to hunt deer; it often eliminates hunting spots that are barren of animals, and really narrows down the amount of square kilometers that must be covered to contact an animal. It just comes at the expense of working some difficult terrain and requires hunters to use a boat to move from spot to another.
