"I'm still not sure I quite believe it," the soft-spoken [Jacqueline Kirk] said in an interview in his living room. "They called and I didn't really quite believe it. I was hoping I was still asleep and it was a dream but it was for real."

Kirk added that he had no doubt about the effect his wife had on the regions she visited. "Her work's got a lot of lasting value," he said. "She's made a huge difference in the world already but I think it's just a tragedy -- a stupid waste that she should be brought to a halt so violently and so soon. She had so much that she was offering people."

"They were here helping Afghan people," the driver said. "They were not carrying weapons."
