Instantly, it was noted, the Edge felt better than any Ford before -- quieter, smoother, more stable -- almost as if Ford engineers dissected a Lexus RX 350 in a quest for that comfortable, luxurious ride. Even the dashboard vents looked like those in the Lexus.

Starting at $32,999, the Edge is classified as a crossover, or small SUV. Available in two trim levels, the SE and SEL, the Edge comes with or without AWD. Our SEL tester came fully equipped with AWD and clocked in at $42,599.

There's adequate back seat room as well, and the rear seats pass the dozing child test: They partially recline. The 60-40 split rear seats will also fold flat when more cargo room is required. With the seats up, there's enough room for snowboards and gear for two children. The SEL comes with a power fold feature for the seats.
