At the last federal election, the majority of voters were more than 50 years old. A new majority is born, the graying class, and it is rapidly imposing its concerns on the political system. This development profoundly changes society's expectations of what government should do. At 50, the age for big dreams and great ambitions has generally passed. Now that they make up the majority of the electorate, they carry much weight at election time. And as baby boomers continue to age, their influence will only increase. The graying baby-boom voters will continue to shape the government's agenda. As a result, politicians will need to be good managers rather than visionaries and will need to offer real solutions instead of proposing new challenges.
