Summary
The process of Hollywood blurbs is a fascinating one. [Shawn Edwards], for instance, is identified as a critic for Fox TV, but he works for an affiliate, WDAF-TV in Kansas City, which presumably doesn't sound as authoritative in the ads. Then there's the case of Ben Lyons, the son of [Jeffrey Lyons] and also a movie critic for a New York television station. He called the well-received American Gangster, "An American classic... Goodfellas for the next generation." However, he also said of the documentary Mr. Untouchable -- the true story of Nicky Barnes, one of the mobsters portrayed in American Gangster -- "it makes American Gangster look like a fairy tale." Hollywoodbitchslap.com gets apoplectic about this kind of thing.
Another wonderful thing about movie quotes is that the person quoted doesn't have to think up their enthusiastic reaction or, in fact, even exist. The quote industry was rocked to its core in 2001 when it was revealed that, in order to get appropriate comments, Sony Pictures invented a critic named "David Manning" and quoted him in its ads. "Another winner!" he said about Rob Schneider's film The Animal, or probably would have if there was a David Manning. To be fair, in his blurb for A Knight's Tale, Manning called Heath Ledger "the year's hottest new star," which was pretty prescient of him, all things considered.See the full content of this document
