That I've had the chance to help the many children who are born into dire life situations that are beyond comprehension, is a gift I am grateful for. It shines far brighter than the gold medal I won in Turin."

After winning gold in the 5,000 metres at the speed skating oval -- the second medal of the Games for Hughes in Turin and fifth of her Olympic career -- Hughes pledged $10,000 of her own money in support of the group Right to Play, which runs programs in underdeveloped and wartorn countries giving children the support and equipment they need to play sports.
