Time to Reach for the Stars, Winnipeg

Summary

Winnipeg, often billed as "Canada's cultural capital", makes things happen and does things first. The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) is the first national aboriginal network in the world -- and the first Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce in Canada can be found in Winnipeg too. And let's not forget that Manitoba became the first province to allow women to vote, thanks to Nellie McClung.

We need to remember the name Claire Wihogora, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide in 1994. A documentary called Yesterday in Rwanda, chronicles Claire's experiences as well as her struggle as a newcomer to Canada, while living with "the rawness of tragedy" and "the horrors of memory."

Many community leaders recognize the impact the museum could have for Winnipeg, Canada and the world. The University of Winnipeg's Global College and the University of Manitoba's Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice are initiating workshops and conferences on human -- rights and starting to brand Winnipeg as a leader in human rights. In part, Stuart Duncan, president of Destination Winnipeg says: "We have to become the human rights capital of the world." It is an important component of the Spirited Energy brand.
