Summary
I have also been told that adding GM E.O.S. or GM camshaft and lifter prelube at the time of oil changes will have the same effect as the zinc that is in the oil now. Will this upset the additive package the oil company has in their oil? Also, I have read most additives hinder piston ring lubing and wear out cylinders, also that most additives end up in the oil filter and do nothing but clog it up. The question is, to add additives or not to add additives?
Adding additives won't hinder piston ring lubing or wear out cylinders. This misconception may have come from engine rebuilders, some of whom recommend no additives while the engine is breaking in. The anti-scuff additives may have hindered older style piston rings from breaking in, but not the moly rings used today. Neither will the additives just end up in the oil filter. Oil additives mix with the engine oil and circulate with it. If anything plugs the filter, it could be engine sludge that has been cleaned by the extra detergents in some additives. The dash buttons for transfer case shifting on your truck send signals to an electronic module that controls an electric shift motor on the transfer case. The motor moves a cam plate inside the transfer case to shift between ranges and 2WD and 4WD modes. From your description, it sounds like the transfer case is shifting into 4WD Hi mode by itself while driving and engaging the automatic front hubs.See the full content of this document
