A Total Eclipse of the Moon

Summary

When the sun, the Earth and the moon are aligned in that order, the sun's light, normally reflected off the surface of the moon, is blocked by the Earth.

With gases and volcanic ash in the Earth's atmosphere bending the light that does manage to strike the moon's surface, the moon can appear yellow, orange or even dark red during an eclipse.

Earth's shadow will begin moving across the moon at 2:18 p.m. CST today, with the total eclipse occurring at 4:44 p.m. CST and lasting more than an hour.
