Justice Minister Rob Nicholson's new anti-gang bill includes an automatic charge of first-degree murder for any gang-related killing, which means upon conviction, the sentence is automatically life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years. The Winnipeg Police Service declined to comment on the proposed legislation until it has had time to review it fully, but the union representing police officers in the city described the toughened proposed law as a "breath of fresh air" for officers and those they're sworn to protect.
