The most recent tongue-twister in Ottawa concerns Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt who, less exotically, left secret documents concerning Atomic Energy Commission Ltd. at a CTV studio. Opposition parties are fiercely demanding that she be sacked, but Prime Minister Stephen Harper has refused to accept her resignation, arguing that her circumstances and those of Mr. [Maxime Bernier] are completely different. He is probably right, but Canadians don't have a great tradition to instruct them in how to think about these things.

Ms. Raitt's portfolio includes Canada's nuclear industry, and the misplaced documents pertain to that. Nuclear energy is a major issue in Canada. Not only is it the most practical and viable alternative to fossil fuels, it also employs some of the world's most proficient nuclear scientists and technicians -- the shutdown of the Chalk River reactor in Ontario has created an international medical crisis because it has cut off the production of a significant proportion of the radioactive isotopes that are used in medical diagnoses for cancer.
