Summary


Derian Bird wandered from his home Thursday morning and it wasn't until an hour later that a 17-year-old family babysitter watching him and his two older siblings noted his absence. The child's uncle discovered the toddler's mangled remains on a neighbour's property 200 metres away, not far from several chained and loose dogs.

Manitoba's Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Thambirajah Balachandra said yesterday, "I love my dog. And I know dog lovers are going to hate me for this, but I'd rather see 1,000 dogs die before I see a child mauled."

"It's a very complicated issue. People love their dogs and at the same time, things are completely different on reserves. I've been to reserves and sometimes I've been scared of these dogs," Balachandra said.
