"(That cottonwood) was the kind of tree I called my kids before I went up into it," said [Bill Schroeder], recalling a huge tree in Headingley hanging dangerously over neighbour's homes after being split by one of last summer's calamitous storms.

This year's robust infestation of cankerworms can harm trees, said Dorothy Dobbie, president of Winnipeg's Coalition to Save the Elms, which sponsored yesterday's event.

"If you've got a cankerworm infestation, a tree (like an elm) has to regenerate all its leaves, which means it's using energy it could be using to fight something like Dutch Elm Disease," she said. "Of course, it's a concern."
