Summary
An excellent example of one such lake is Athapapuskow, which lies between The Pas and Flin Flon. A large body of water with an excellent population of lake trout, it's an ideal destination for those willing to do a bit of a road trip to experience some great fishing and gorgeous scenery. The entire lake will be open to fishing again today after a fall closure of the south side from Sept. 15 up to and including Oct. 6. If there was ever a good time to get up there, this is it.
With a little bit of exploration and careful observation of the surroundings, look for reefs that break the water's surface or even top out at 10-15 feet. For those reefs that are safe to motor over, make a few long-line trolling passes directly over top as well as around the edges, varying the speed and direction of the boat. For those that are too hazardous to approach, use an anchor and cast, or even better, work your way around the edge and make long casts toward the structure. Don't be surprised if you get a good, hard strike when the bait is in really tight to the reef, as the fish may very well be in water that is shallow enough to stand in. I have even experienced other fish trailing a hooked lake trout being reeled in, only to spook and swim back toward the reef that they came from.See the full content of this document
