Tuition Increase Won't Help Much, Say Universities

The net effect of the tuition increase "was not that significant," noted University of Winnipeg vice-president of finance Bill Balan. U of W is "treading water, and pushing hard to keep our nose above it."

"We certainly appreciate that a university education was made a priority in a difficult year," [David Barnard] said. [Diane McGifford] also stipulated that the maximum in increased fees would include ancillary fees -- so schools cannot do an end run on the capped increases by introducing new student fees for services such as parking, library access, athletic facilities or other services.

Balan said the increased tuition gives U of W around $760,000 more as it tries to balance a budget of close to $100 million. "It's contributed a little, but only a small amount."
