"Mennonites were in the perfect position in Manitoba to have their writing explode in the 1980s," says Hilde Froese Tiessen, who teaches at the University of Waterloo.

Along with Roy Loewen, head of the U of W's Mennonite studies department, Tiessen has organized the fifth International Conference on Mennonite Writing and the first to be held at the genre's ground zero.
