Web Extra: Van Speeds Through Elmwood, Driver Caught After Fleeing On Foot

Summary

Elmwood residents were jarred Monday night by a stolen van careening wildly down a quiet residential street, until the driver took off on foot after abandoning the vehicle in a driveway.

"We saw the van go flying. He was going very, very fast," said Linda Giesbrecht, a Linden Avenue resident who said she was scared by the wildly-driven vehicle because of the group of children playing in her front yard.

Firefighters caught the fires while they were all still small and investigators report that damage amounted to about $25,000 to a two-storey house in the 400 block of Agnes Street. A spokesman with Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service said Sunday that not all the damage was fire related. Investigators also found signs of vandalism, too.
