"We think Manitoba has been overlooked by Genome Canada in the past," [Reno Pontarollo] said. "Now we will be here on a daily basis."

"Manitoba is recognized as a leading edge research centre on canola," said Dave Chomiak, the province's minister of Energy Science and Technology. "We're very excited about the research team at the U of M and it is only going to get better."

"[Canola] already generates about $3 billion in economic activity in the country," he said. "This project will help find ways to increase the quality and the yield. There is also a tremendous future for canola in industrial oils that could provide environmentally renewable sources of energy."
