Summary


On what should have been a sleepy Sunday night in the middle of August, Moncton's Main Street was alive with a small but healthy smattering of humanity that gave the heart of the modest Maritime city a tangible pulse.

The city is only one-fifth the size of Winnipeg, but receives far more than its proportional share of summer tourists, primarily because motorists from the U.S. and Canadian heartland must pass through Moncton on their way to the prime Maritime destinations of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Moncton, in comparison, is nowhere near as lively as Halifax, Charlottetown or St. John's. But at some point along the line, entrepreneurs and civic politicians saw the need to build up at least one downtown streetscape.
