Why Veterans Kept Quiet

Summary

What's overlooked, [Ted Barris] says, is that training green pilots was extremely dangerous. Nearly 1,000 pilot-teachers and their students were killed in training accidents "and even military records don't acknowledge that."

Barris also interviewed several Afghan veterans, including, for the first time, some of those involved in the friendly fire incident when an American F-16 dropped a 500-pound bomb on units of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, killing four and wounding eight, including Cpl. Brian Decaire of Portage la Prairie.

In the end, Barris doesn't claim that he fully understands what he's supposed to remember on Nov. 11, but Breaking the Silence comes as close to answering the question as any book can.
