ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia -- "Driving in the land of no fences with Father, Uugii and the G4 Challenge recce team."

Over the course of the last few months, a small "band of brothers" has been roaming the Mongolian countryside identifying suitable locations. I joined them for a four-day drive in Land Rover LR2 and LR3 sport-utility vehicles through the Gobi desert running from Dalanzadad to Bayankhongor, camping in tents along the way.

Our recce was led by South African Devlin Fogg, a former G4 Challenge competitor who now acts as competitions manager. His nine-man team included Uugii, a young Mongolian who speaks English and acted as both translator and "fixer" as well as a Mongolian man who was well into his 50s and known only as "Father," who acted as a guide. These men proved to be invaluable assets to the team in light of their language skills and deep knowledge of the terrain and the nomadic Mongolian way of life.
