[Harry Buekert] and business partner Art Penner bought into a super league proposed by Edmonton's Bill Tainsh. Oscar Grubert, who owned Champs Food Systems (Kentucky Fried Chicken), came on board as the major sponsor. The Knights became the Winnipeg Colonels, competing in a league including the Regina Carlings, Saskatoon Jacks, Braves and Edmonton Monarchs.

Penner regrets the sad state of fast pitch. "I don't even watch the game anymore," he said. "At the 1999 Pan Am Games I watched some ball, but there just isn't much of it being played anymore. It kind of hurts. It's something I did for a few years at the highest level in Canada, maybe the world."
