Summary


Broadcaster Charles Adler of CJOB stepped onstage to read Ernest Thayer's 1888 baseball poem Casey at the Bat. This segment of the show was a little puzzling in its intent, with Adler standing behind an imposing podium and frequently drowned out by the orchestra. There were some special moments, most notably in Beautiful Dreamer, in which flute and bird call merged to create a magical instant. The sad tuba told the story of Casey's failure better than any words ever could.

Assistant conductor Rei Hotoda was piano soloist for the April Fool's Concerto, a gimmicky medley that saw her not only playing, but throwing a bouquet into the audience during the Wedding March portion, pouring champagne during strains of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, playing with a bobblehead doll and blowing out a candle-topped cupcake during the Happy Birthday song.
