ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Matthew Gourlay is a partner at Hen ein Hutchison LLP in Toronto. His practice com-
prises criminal, regulator y, and national security law, with a particular focus on appeals .
Matthew appears regula rly in the Ontario Court of Ap peal and the Supreme Cour t of
Canada. He prosecutes and defend s before a range of professional disciplin ary bodies
in Ontario. He also act s as amicus curiae in national security m atters before the Federal
Court of Canada. He is a leg al editor of the Canadian Criminal Cases and a co-author
(with Matthew Asma) of Charter Rem edies in Criminal Cases: A Practitioner’s Handbo ok
(Emond, 2018). He graduated as gold medalis t from the University of Toronto Faculty of
Law in 2008 and then ser ved as a law clerk at the Supreme Court of C anada for Chief
Justice Beverley McLachlin.
Justice Brock Jones was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice on Decemb er 29,
2021. Prior to his appointment, h e was an Assistant Crown Attorney with th e Scarbor-
ough Crown Attorney’s office in Toronto. He prosecuted all manner of crimin al cases in
both the Ontario and Superi or Courts of Justice. Brock was also Crown Counsel at the
office of Crown Law—Criminal in Ontari o between 2013 and 2016, where he argued
several criminal and constitutional c ases before the Ontario Court of A ppeal. Justice
Jones has authored several ar ticles on digital evidence matters, which have been cited
by courts across Canada. In 2016, he won th e Ontario Bar Association’s Heather McAr-
thur Memorial Young Lawyer s’ Award. In 2020, he won the Ontario Bar Asso ciation’s
Award for Excellence in Criminal Justice. He is al so the co-author of Prosecuting and
Defending Youth Criminal Justice Cases from Emond Publishing.
Jill Makepeace is a partner at Greenspan Hump hrey Weinstein LLP in Toronto. Jill’s
practice is divided bet ween conducting criminal tria ls and appeals. In a ddition to her
commitment to practice, Jill enjoys teaching a nd mentoring law students. She currently
serves as an articling p rincipal and was a devoted sessional lec turer at the University
of Windsor Faculty of Law for a decade. Sh e has taught criminal law, advanced crim-
inal law, and an advanced advocac y seminar geared to students pu rsuing criminal law
careers. Jill also contributes re gularly to continuing legal education programs and cur-
rently serves as co-editor of the public ation of the Criminal Lawyers’ A ssociation, For
the Defen ce. She received her LLB from the University of Windsor an d her LLM from the
University of Alber ta. Jill was called to the Ontario bar in June of 2006.
Glen Crisp, LLB, LLM, is an A ssistant Crown Attorney with the Minis try of the Attorney
General (Ontario), Guns and G angs Unit in Toronto. He received his LLB from the Schul-
ich School of Law (Dalhousie) in 2001 an d his LLM in criminal law and procedure from
Osgoode Hall Law Schoo l in 2016. After being called to the bar in 2002, Glen joined the
