About the Authors

The Honourable Justice Davin Michael Garg is a judge of the Ontario Court of

Justice, sitting in Hamilton. He primarily presides over criminal trials that deal with

all manner of charges under the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substances

Act. Justice Garg was born and raised in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver, British

Columbia. He earned his business degree from Simon Fraser University and graduated

from the Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia. In 2023, Justice

Garg was recognized in the publication “50 Under 50: Young and Aspiring Indo-

Canadians” by Maneesh Media.

Prior to his judicial appointment, Justice Garg was Crown counsel with Ontario’s

Ministry of the Attorney General at the Crown Law Oce (Criminal) where he served

as a well-respected trial and appellate counsel. He conducted Criminal Code appeals

at the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. He also handled

trials for corruption and white-collar oences, gave advice on driving cases, and co-

chaired the oce’s education committee. Before joining the Crown Law Oce, Justice

Garg was a trial Crown at the Etobicoke Crown Attorney’s Oce. Justice Garg has

been regularly involved in continuing professional education, having taught at the

Ontario Police College, Osgoode Professional Development programs, and multiple

judicial conferences.

Justice Garg practised law and presides over cases in both English and French. He

is a member of the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario. Justice

Garg volunteered with the “Défi de la Charte” program of the Ontario Justice Educa-

tion Network, which allowed French-speaking high school students to explore Charter

issues through mock litigation.

At the time of his judicial appointment, Justice Garg was a director on the board of

the South Asian Bar Association of Toronto, the largest equity-seeking bar association

in Canada. Justice Garg led the charge in organizing educational, social, and mentor-

ship events for the membership. He is most proud of his eorts to support new and

immigrant lawyers in their rise through the profession. Justice Garg is also a member

of The Advocates’ Society, has been a member of the Federation of Asian Canadian

Lawyers of Ontario, and was on the board of the Canada India Network Society.
