Justice Jonathan Dawe, BSc, LLB, LLM, is a judge of the Court of Appeal for

Ontario. After receiving his LLB in 1994 from the University of Toronto Faculty of

Law, he served as law clerk to former Chief Justice Lamer at the Supreme Court of

Canada, and then obtained an LLM from the Yale Law School. For more than

20 years, hepractised criminal law in Ontario with a primary focus on criminal

appeals. He also taught criminal procedure as an adjunct professor at the University

of Toronto Faculty of Law and was a co-founder of the faculty’s appellate criminal

litigation externship program. He was appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior

Court of Justice in December 2018, and he was appointed to the Court of Appeal for

Ontario in November 2023.

Justice Maureen McGuire is a judge of the Alberta Court of King’s Bench. She is a

graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University (BA 1990) and the University of Manitoba

(LLB 1997). Prior to her appointment in 2024, Justice McGuire practised criminal

law in Ontario, the Northwest Territories, and Alberta both as a criminal defence

lawyer and as a prosecutor. As appellate counsel, she appeared regularly before the

Alberta Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. Justice McGuire has

been a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta since 2010. She previously

taught legal research and writing, and she currently teaches appellate practice and

procedure.

Justice Michael Dineen is a judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in

Toronto. Before his appointment, he practised criminal law, focusing almost

exclusively on appeals as both a defence lawyer and as Crown counsel. He was an

adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and Osgoode Hall Law

School for many years, teaching a variety of courses relating to criminal law.

Mark Halfyard, LLB, is a criminal defence lawyer with the law f‌irm of Daniel Brown

Law LLP—a boutique criminal defence f‌irm in Toronto that specializes in criminal,

constitutional, and appellate law. His practice is almost exclusively in the area of

criminal appeals. Mark graduated from the University of Ottawa (LLB, cum laude)

and was called to the bar in 2005. He appears regularly at the Ontario Court of
