ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Nicholas B ala has been a Professor at the Faculty of Law at Queen’s
University since 1980. Most of his teaching and research has been in
the area of family and ch ildren’s law, with research focusing on issue s
related to young offenders, child witnesses and child abuse, spousa l
abuse, and parental rights and responsibilities after divorce. Much of
his research work is interd isciplinar y and he has undertaken coll ab-
orative projects with criminologists, psychologists, soci al workers, and
health professionals. Professor Bala has published exten sively and this
is the eighteenth book that he ha s written or co-authored. His work has
been cited by all levels of court in Can ada, including most of the recent
Supreme Court of Canada decisions deal ing with youth justice issues.
He frequently presents at professional education progra ms for judges,
lawyers, probation off‌icers, youth workers, teachers, doctors, psycholo-
gists, child welfare workers, and social workers.
Sanjeev Anand is the Dean at the College of Law at the University of
Saskatchewan. He is a former prosecutor and began h is career as a
Legal Aid staff lawyer whose practice prima rily dealt with t he defence
of young offenders.He teaches and researches in f‌ive f‌ields: substan-
tive criminal law, criminal procedure, sentencing, evidence, and con-
stitutional law. An area of particul ar interest to Dr. Anand is youth
justice. He has authored or co-authored more than a dozen book chap-
ters, journal art icles, and commissioned reports on var ious aspects of
Canada’s juvenile justice system. Dean A nand’s work has been cited
by courts across the nat ion, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
