About the Authors

Julien D. Payne, CM, QC, LLD, LSM, FRSC, is one of Canada’s pre-eminent

family law speci alists and has been called the arch itect of Unif‌ied Family

Courts and no-fault divorce. He has t aught family law at the universities of

Alberta, Oawa, Western Ont ario, and Saskatchewan, and has wr ien very

extensively about family law a nd family dispute resolution. He is the author

of Payne on Divorce, 4th ed (Carswell, 1996), and is the co-author with his

wife, Marilyn, of Cana dian Family Law and its companion text, Child Support

Guidelines in Canada, 2022, both of which are published by Irw in Law. His

writings have been c ited more than 2,000 times by tria l courts and appellate

courts in Can ada, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He wa s awarded

the Law Society Medal by t he Law Society of Upper Canada in 2002 and was

made a member of the Order of Canada in 2004.

Marilyn A. Payne is an ex perienced author and the founding editor of the

loose-leaf service Payne’s Divorce and Family Law Digest, 1980–1999. She is

the co-author of Canadian Family Law and Child Support Guidelines in Canada,

2022 (Irwin Law).
