ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
tHe stories anD vignettes contained in Buttery are a collection
of some of the cases that appeared before me while presiding at the
mental health court in downtown Toronto. Many are rather pedes-
trian, quotidian. Many are, as they say, stranger than ction. A rst
version of this eort was written a few years ago as a book chapter
in the very interesting book entitled Shrunk: Crime and Disorders of
the Mind (Calgary: Durvile Publications, 2011), which was edited by
Lorene Shyba and my friend Dr J Thomas Dalby. At a book launch for
Shrunk, my friend, The Honourable Patrick J LeSage, former Chief
Justice of the Ontario Superior Court, responded with considerable
encouragement when, upon positive review, I suggested that perhaps
I should expand the chapter into a more fulsome collection of inter-
esting stories.
Over my almost twenty years on the bench, I have kept all of
my bench books the books a judge keeps to record proceedings in
court. I have also kept transcripts where they recorded interesting
events. Over the past few years, I set about putting a larger collec-
tion of stories together.
I am indebted to my publisher, Je Miller, for supporting this
project. As well, I am deeply indebted to my editor, Lesley Steeve,
for her great ideas and the conversion of my disorganized manu-
script into something much more readable. To the extent that it is
not readable, or takes perspectives that are unpopular or unclear, I
