Acknowledgments

My thanks to Chantal Desloges for her invitation to take part in writing this book and

to Aris Daghighian for agreeing to join me on this adventure. Writing a text like this

is a little like solving a jigsaw puzzle: it’s a task that’s more enjoyable with a friend.

Also, this text could not have been written without the efforts of Chantal Des-

loges and Cathryn Sawicki, as well as the team at Emond, including Danann Hawes,

Heather Gough, Natalie Berchem, Rebecca Russell, and Julie van Tol.

Given that no person is an island in the practice of law, I would like to acknowledge

the friendship, mentorship, and insight of my colleagues in this field; this text owes

an enormous debt of gratitude to the litigators (and jurists) that have helped shape

the law, jurisprudence, and policy that we have attempted to set forth in these pages.

Practising law has been a privilege, and I am grateful to my law partner, Bjorn

Harsanyi, QC, and our late partner Charles Stewart, QC—we started a firm together

and started on the path of “crimmigration” over a decade ago—and my thanks to our

associates and all our staff who have contributed to our efforts and success over the

years.

There is no practice of law without faithful clients; a special thanks to the clients

who have chosen us to assist them in navigating the labyrinth of Canadian immigra-

tion law and inadmissibility.

I would like to acknowledge my parents and my elders; I have received great inspi-

ration from the paths they took in coming to this country and their efforts since arriv-

ing here. I see their early struggles reflected in the lives of my clients today.

To my wife, Jasmeen, for holding down the fort and allowing me to dedicate the

time and effort necessary towards the practice of law and ancillary projects including

writing and teaching. And my children, who may only have a vague idea of what I do

for work but are a continual source of joy and love.
