Acknowledgments

I believe there are two types of book readers: those who read the acknowledgments in

books and those who don’t. I guess I know where you stand on this issue, and I proudly

stand with you (metaphorically, of course, as most people don’t stand when they read

nor am I standing as I write this).

There are many people who deserve my thanks for their role in assisting me, in one

way or another, in the writing of this book.

I have to start with the general editors of the Criminal Law Series at Emond, Brian

Greenspan and Justice Enzo Rondinelli. They were the ones who thought that this

series needed a book on Indigenous issues, and they deserve thanks for that vision. As

they also suggested me as the writer for the book, I am doubly thankful.

Danann Hawes, the publisher at Emond, approached me to write the book and

convinced me that I could do it. Danann and Heather Gough, my editor, deserve thanks

for putting up with my shifting deadlines and also for recognizing that a book like this

was going to look a bit dierent from other legal texts; they were nothing but supportive.

Janelle Bowman was the copy editor on the first edition and Rose Knecht on the second,

and they did a fine job of finding all the things I missed. Finally, in this regard, thanks

to everyone at Emond for all their support for this project.

Thanks also to Justice Harry LaForme for graciously agreeing to write a foreword

for this book—it means a lot to me.

A big chi miigwetch (“thank you” in Ojibway) to Zachary Biech and John River

Sommerhalder. Zach was the researcher for the first edition of this book, but the word

“researcher” does not do enough to capture everything he brought to the project.

Zach also wrote the bibliography on treaties as well as books and articles on Indigenous

concepts of justice in Appendix A. River was the researcher for this second edition

and did a great job responding to both my very general and my very specific requests

for information. He not only addressed those requests but provided a useful perspec-

tive on the material he found. Thanks to the Callwood Fellowship at the University of

Toronto, Faculty of Law, for providing the funding to allow both Zach and River to

work on this project, and to Amanda Carling, who was the Manager of Indigenous

Initiatives at the law school, for suggesting Zach and River and for administering the

fellowship in a very user-friendly way.
