I would like to thank my daughters Georgia and Samantha Gardner for their never-

ending support of my dreams and their unwavering belief in their eventual fruition.

I have been fortunate that some of the finest lawyers in the country have given me

the opportunity to learn from them. I continually aspire to live up to their models

of integrity, excellence, and commitment to justice. They include Justice David

McCombs, Christine McGoey, and the late Earl Fruchtman. I have been honoured

throughout this project to work with Danielle Robitaille and Maya Borooah. Danielle

Robitaille is an extraordinary lawyer: passionate, smart, hardworking, and overflowing

with integrity. Maya Borooah is one of this country’s rising stars. She is smart, hard-

working, principled, committed to excellence, and generous with her time and intel-

lect. I am grateful to Justice David Cole. His support and encouragement sowed the

seeds that have grown into this book. I would like to thank Justice Vincenzo Rondinelli,

project. Their daily displays of talent, intellect, and courage leave me inspired to keep

fighting. I have been outrageously fortunate to be mentored by Marie Henein, who is

always urging me to take on work and endeavours that push me out of my comfort
