I wish to acknowledge my employers, the Financial and Consumer Aairs Authority

of Saskatchewan and the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, who have always

provided me with extremely interesting employment and the best people in the world

to work with and for. My research and comments in this book do not bind these Min-

istries in any way.

I also wish to thank my brilliant friends and colleagues, Jonathan Shime and Ian

Smith. Their suggestions and ideas have been outstanding. It has been an honour to

work with such brilliant defence counsel.

The Emond Publishing sta have been extremely supportive, helpful, and patient.

Special thanks goes to Mr Danann Hawes and Ms Heather Gough. Ms Rose Knecht

was a very knowledgeable editor when the first edition went to print in 2018, and

MrDarryl Kamo was a superb editor during preparation of the second edition. They

both have been unbelievably helpful in correcting grammar, perfecting tense flows,

and debating the ever-challenging issue of whether or not to capitalize common terms

used in the criminal justice system. My sincere thanks to these wonderful professionals

Finally, I wish to acknowledge the wonderful freedoms and liberties we enjoy in

Canada and our Canadian criminal justice system. I look elsewhere in the world and

am grateful for the lawyers and justices who strive daily to fulfill their obligation to

uphold the Rule of Law in this country. I was reminded once again of this important

fact by my dear friend, Mr Justice Enzo Rondinelli, when he accepted the award of

excellence from the Ontario Bar Association Criminal Justice Section in June 2017. In

fact, had it not been for Mr Justice Rondinelli, I would never have been asked to co-

author this book, and I remain eternally grateful to him and the principles for which

he, and all of us, labour tirelessly.

I was asked to review the first edition of this book for the Canadian Criminal Law

Review. Apparently, I said enough nice things about it that the authors, Grace Hession

David and Jonathan Shime, both of whom I knew as impressive lawyers, invited me

to participate as a co-author of this new, second edition. It was an invitation I was

pleased to accept and for which I am very grateful.
