My greatest privilege in life is my family. I recall fondly when I first announced this

project to them in the Okanagan region of British Columbia during the summer of

2022. To my parents, thank you for setting the bar high and instilling in me the dedica-

tion required to complete this project. There are authors going up my family tree, and

I am honoured to join their company. To my wife, Libby, you are the one who planted

the seed of writing a book. Thank you for believing in me. You always supported me

when the finish line seemed too distant to reach. To my son Théodore, you are my

motivation in life. Thank you for often permitting me to write this book as you went

to bed and again as you woke up. I also enjoyed our times drafting together, even if

those portions of the manuscript needed extra attention during editing. Je t’aime. And

I cannot forget our chihuahua, Bellalou, who was a frequent companion on my chair

during the writing process.

I got my first choice when looking for a co-author. It was a pleasure working with

Anil Kapoor. Anil brings his gravitas, credibility, and well-earned reputation to this

venture. And special mention to Jacob Millns, whom I got to know when I served as

his articling principal. Now an excellent lawyer, Jake produced invaluable research and

deserves credit for contributing to this book’s nationwide scope.

were others working behind the scenes who made this production a reality. My thanks

I must acknowledge my fellow authors in this criminal law series who inspired me

to write this book, some of whom were my colleagues when I started writing. They

do not know that they inspired me, but I looked up to them as champions in the legal

profession. I wish to single out Matthew Asma. He always oered sage advice and

was generous with his time. He gave me the confidence to pitch this book in the

firstplace.
