Parkes, a lawyer who teaches legal writing at the Univer-
sity of Ottawa Common Law Section. She assisted me
with both organization and content. Errors and contro-
versy are mine, however, not hers.
A word of thanks is due to my law clerk, Mary Neill,
who has participated in many ways to make this book
possible. Another word is due to the many participants in
the Advocacy Club and the newly minted Writers Club.
As my father used to say, if you want to learn a subject,
teach it. I have learned far more from them than the other
way ‘round.
I should also acknowledge the vision and commit-
ment shown by Irwin Law. e series is a novel approach
to an unrecognized market comprised of recent calls to
the bar. Alisa Posesorski (vice president) and Lesley Steeve
(senior editor) have added real value to the series. Irwin
Law has adapted its system to accommodate the series, en-
abling me to accomplish my goal — to serve that market.
