A. INTRODUCTION
Dr Abby Lippman, emeritus professor at the Department of Epidemiology,
Biostatistics and Occupational Health at McGill University, passed away on
 December . Her death leaves a great void. As a renowned scholar,
Abby made it her mission to raise consciousness, advance knowledge, and
mobilize for social justice and respect for human dignity. As a feminist, she
used her expertise to advance issues related to women’s health, particu-
larly reproductive health, and she was relentless in promoting respect for
women’s integrity and dignity.
In November , Abby and I co-authored a commentary on surrogacy
when the Government of Canada announced that it planned to introduce
regulations to strengthen the Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHRA). In
the summer of , Abby supported me in writing a commentary in response
to Health Canada’s consultation document entitled “Toward a Strengthened
Assisted Human Reproduction Act: A Consultation with Canadians on Key
Policy Proposals,” which included proposals for regulations on surrogacy.1
1 I am very grateful to the co-editors of this publication for enabling me to participate
and, in so doing, pay a tribute to my lost friend Abby Lippman. I also thank Alana
Cattapan for her helpful revision and Diane Guilbault for her support of my work on
surrogacy.
