CONVENTION FOR THE UNIFICATION OF CERTAIN RULES RELATING

TO INTERNATIONAL CARRIAGE BY AIR, SIGNED AT WARSAW ON 12

OCTOBER 1929 (WARSAW CONVENTION)

CHAPTER I

SCOPE — DEFINITIONS

Article 1

1. This Convention applies to all international carr iage of persons, lug-

gage or goods per formed by aircraft for reward. It applies equally to grat ui-

tous carriage by airc raft performed by an air transport under taking.

2. For the purposes of this Convention the expression “international car-

riage” means any carriage in which, according to the contract made by the

parties, t he place of departure and the place of dest ination, whether or not

there be a break in the carriage or a transhipment, are situated either withi n

the terr itories of two High Contracti ng Parties, or w ithin the territory of a

single Hig h Contracting Par ty, i f there is an agreed stopping place w ithin

a territory subject to t he sovereignty, suzerainty, mandate or authority of

another Power, even though that Power is not a par ty to t his Convention.

A carr iage without such an agreed stopping place between terr itories sub-

ject to the sovereignty, suzerainty, mandate or authority of the same High

Contracting Part y is not deemed to be international for the pur poses of this

Convention.

3. A carriage to be performed by several successive air carriers is deemed,

for the pur poses of this Convention, to be one undivided car riage, if it has
