Scope Banking law in Canada is largely governed by federal legislation under the Bank Act, S.C. 1991, c. 46 and the Trust and Loan Companies Act, S.C. 1991, c. 45. Federal banks fall under the jurisdiction of the federal Department of Finance. Additional legislation can also apply, and credit unions are often governed by provincial legislation, such as the Credit Union Act, S.N.S. 1994, c. 4.
