Given the signif‌icance of energy production to the economies of a number of provinces (e.g.,

oil and natural gas in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Atlantic provinces and hydro-electricity

in Manitoba and Québec), and Canada’s historic reputation as an exporter of natural resour-

ces, it is little wonder that this is becoming a very important area of the law throughout the

country. It is an area of mixed jurisdictions and is heavily regulated at both the provincial and
