Finding and Updating Statutes,
Regulations, and Cases
When you research a legal issue, you have to determine whether any statutes, regu-
lations, and cases are relevant to it. A legal encyclopedia—the best place to start your
research—should refer you to any such statutes, regulations, and cases, but there are
additional tools, both print and online, for finding these primary sources. We discuss
these finding tools in this part.
If your initial research shows you that there are relevant statutes, regulations, and
cases, you must have the necessary skills to locate the text of those primary sources
and then to update them. This part teaches such skills, with reference to both print and
online resources.
