It is a great pleasure to wr ite this foreword to the f‌ifth edition of my

colleague Kent Roach’s book, Criminal Law. There is no Canadian book

like it and all those study ing criminal law will b e indebted to Professor

Roach for his very readable and careful analysis of Can adian criminal

law. This book will be an excellent companion for students in cri m-

inal law courses both in the law schools and cri minology and crimi nal

justice departments. As is demonstrated by its citation by the Supreme

Court and other courts, even judges and sea soned criminal lawyers

will benef‌it from readi ng the thoughtful views on the ba sic principles

of criminal l aw articulated in this book. In addition, it deal s with many

new developments in criminal l aw, such as new provisions relating

to self-defence and defence of property. The fact that Professor Roach

has acted as counsel in a number of important Charter and sentencing

cases discussed in the book provides a n added dimension to this work.

This thoroughly revised f‌ifth edition, like the f‌irst, second, third and

fourth, is destined to be w idely used and praised. I look forward to

many future editions of th is valuable book.
