AESCHINES

The

An
Athenian
orator
who
spent
many
years
in
exile
and
was
involved
in
several
politically
motivated
lawsuits.
He
lived
during
the
same
turbulent
period
that
led
to
the
prosecution
and
execution
of
Socrates.
Four
of
his
speeches
are
extant.
ANTIPHON
(C.
480-411
B.C.):
An
Athenian
orator
and
politician
and
a
contemporary
of
Sophocles.
He
wrote
law-court
speeches
for
litigants
and
also
wrote
sample
four-part
speeches
(tetralogies)
for
hypothetical
lawsuits
in
which
he
provided
opening
and
closing
arguments
for
both
the
prosecution
and
the
defence.
Like
Socrates,
he
was
put
on
trial,
con
victed,
and
executed
for
political
reasons.
Six
of
his
speeches
are
extant.
AREOPAGUS:
The
name
of
a
hill
in
Athens
(the
hill
of
Ares
)
near
the
Acropolis
and
overlooking
the
Agora
(see
Map
2
in
Appendix
A),
and
the
name
of
the
court
that
met
there
and
heard
cases
of
homicide,
