Half-billion funnelled into Northern Ontario highways.

The Ontario government announced it's spending $541 million in its Northern Highways Program for 2016 and 2017.

A major highlight is the ongoing four-laning of Highway 69 between Sudbury and Parry Sound with 11 kilometres of new road opened in early August.

The government said, to date, 70 kilometres have been completed and 14 kilometres are under construction with only 68 kilometres to go on the property acquisition and engineering front.

On the other end of the region, the march continues to widen the Highway 11-17 corridor between Thunder Bay and Nipigon to four lanes.

Construction is underway on 19.5 kilometres of four-laning, as well as the Nipigon River bridge approaches.

The province has approved funding for the expansion of an additional 15.1 kilometres in the corridor. These contracts are expected to be tendered...
