Expect to see and hear more about legal knowledge management in the coming years due to the increasing pressures on lawyers to work more effectively and cost efficiently. For lawyers in large law firms, there will ordinarily be some level of knowledge management infrastructure that will involve one or more of the following activities: document and records management, precedent development, legal research and intranet content delivery, professional development and training, litigation support and project management, and practice management.

Each of these aspects of knowledge management can involve different skill sets and technologies, in addition to the need to work with various departments within the organization. For some of these tasks, technology plays a huge role, whether in document management, smart search, or online training, to name but a few examples.
