Neskantaga opens remote training centre.

Neskantaga First Nation celebrated the grand opening of its new remote training centre in August.

In a news release, the Aecon Group, one of the training centre partners, said the fully-wired, multi-purpose facility contains construction components designed to be flown into remote communities and assembled on-site.

Neskantaga is remote Oji-Cree community located 560 kilometres north of Thunder Bay near the dormant Ring of Fire mineral deposits.

Aecon, one of Canada's largest constructors, worked on the project with the Kiikenomaga Kikenjigew-en Employment and Training Services (KKETS), ATCO Structures & Logistics, Bell Canada, Cisco Canada, Galaxy -Satellite, Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario and Confederation College.

The centre is funded by the provincial government but it's owned and operated by the Matawa First Nations, a tribal council of nine member communities near the Ring of Fire mineral deposits.

Aecon and KKETS had entered into a partnership to provide community access to education, trades and apprenticeship training programs.

The facility is outfitted with new technology, including high-definition two-way video communication technology, a 70-inch Smart Board, a 70-inch LED HDTV, highspeed satellite broadband connectivity and individual laptops.
