PREFACE

by Lyndsey Delamont and Meaghan McWhinnie

is ye ar, the Appeal Editorial Boa rd focu sed on increasi ng the diversit y, quality, and

quantity of our student submissions. We made signif‌icant progress towards this goal,

having re ceived a record numb er of submissions for Volume 17, including submissions

from almost every law sc hool in Canada as wel l a s an appreciable quantity from

international common-law schools. Over the years, Appeal’s mandate has been to operate

as a student-run journal that publishes solely student work; Appeal is proud to be a

forum for presenting strong student writing. is year, we received numerous requests to

reproduce our published articles, w hich is a test ament to the ever-increasin g quality of

student legal scholar ship published in the journal.

As part of our ef‌f ort to further i ncrease the quality of the journal, t he Board introduced

the 2012 McCa rthy Tétrault Law Journal Prize for Exceptional Writing. is $1000

award is bestowed upon the student who in the opinion of the Appeal Board, in

conjunction with our faculty supervisors, has produced the art icle that best exemplif‌ies

the presentation of a legal topic in an i nsightful and persuasive man ner.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s recipient is Rebecca Ross, author of Blasphemy

and the Modern, “Secular” S tate. Rebecca’s piece a sks whether a law against blasphemy

can be consistent with freedoms of expre ssion a nd religion. In doing so, Rebecca

thoughtful ly illustrates the problems associated w ith the bala ncing of competing rig hts,

particula rly in a multicultural society li ke Canada.

It h as been an honour to oversee the creat ion of Volume 17 of Appeal. is volume
