A. ABOUT THIS BOOK
This book identif‌ies and explains primar y Ontario workplace laws that
regulate company employment practices and policies, and impact how
employers manage the workplace. It examines the role of government
ocials, including Ontario Ministry of Lab our employment standards of-
f‌icers and labour relations ocers, and arbitrators who interpret those
laws, as well as the process by which labour and employment disputes
are resolved by the workplace tribunal system and the courts. This book
also addresses the application of the common law, or judge-made law,
to employment relationships.
B. THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK
The purpose of this book is to raise the awareness of entrepreneurs, busi-
ness owners, and risk takers to the facts of workplace regulation in On-
tario and to how the laws are interpreted and applied by the courts, the
Ministry of Labour, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Ontario
Labour Relations Board, and arbitrators. This book provides emp loyers
with practical, basic information about processes and procedures that
regulate management of the workplace in Ontario. It has been written to
help owners, managers, and entrepreneurs proactively manage employ-
ees with a view to developing best employment practices and avoiding
third-party interference.
